3 Drills to Help You Improve the Speed of Your Bat
Alright, so here we are. The moment you’ve all been waiting for… the 3 best drills to get that bat speed as fast as Ken Griffey Jr. back in his prime. For those of you who are too young to remember him, that’s a shame.
For all others that love Griffey… we salute you! Ok, let’s get into the three drills for bat speed success!
Drill #1: Rotational Hip Swingers
This may sound counter intuitive, however, every great baseball hitter gets their power from their hips. Rotating the hips correctly and efficiently will give you tremendous bat speed.
For this drill, you need some space and some time. Get on all fours and lift your knee up sideways. Do 4 sets of 25 while you’re watching tv (preferably the Red Sox game for best entertainment purposes). Rotate both legs and use your hips. Over time, you will develop strength. So just stick with it.
Drill #2: Tip the bat
That’s right. Just before you hit, tip it down and use the momentum to your advantage. It provides the most whip and crazy extension. Can you say Bombs away?
What you’re going to do with this drill is buy a tee and a net and practice your tip down. Just before you swing, you will tip the bat down and then back to your swinging plane. Remember, this will require thousands of reps to master.
Every big time hitter in the Big Leagues uses this technique. If you study the film, you’ll quickly see it is legit.
Drill #3: Weight Shift
If you want to hit frozen ropes all day, you’re going to need strong legs and fundamentally sound weight shifting. Back to front everyone, back to front. Just like Chubs Peterson said in Happy Gilmore… it’s all in the hips!
Well, in this case its actually all in the weight shift.
For this drill, you will need your tee, bat and net once again… don’t leave home without it!
You will need to swing away and every time you hit the ball, take mental notes as to where your power is being transferred to throughout your body.
Eventually, you will find out your power zone and how to shift your weight perfectly.
